ALTA MESA, Monterey — October 29, 2026. A previously submitted neighborhood improvement request for Lagunita Mirada Park carried an estimated price tag of $1.2 million in Monterey’s December 17, 2025 Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program (NCIP) project register. The request concerned pedestrian access between Via Mirada and Fremont Street along with maintenance and landscape work beside the park’s water feature.
The budget figure is significant for a neighborhood-scale proposal, but the city register is a list of candidate projects. It does not establish that $1.2 million was appropriated, a bid was awarded, or construction was completed during 2026.
What improvements did the original application seek?
Project AM-01 was received on October 22, 2024 for the fiscal 2025–26 improvement program. The city identified it as Lagunita Mirada Park near the corner of Fremont and Via Mirada. Its summary sought four practical changes: resurfacing the walkway between Via Mirada and Fremont Street, installing landscaping, maintaining the reeds around the lake, and improving trash collection.
Those are proposed tasks, not findings that the park was closed or that its existing path failed an accessibility inspection. More detailed engineering and environmental review would be needed to determine how any future work should affect the water feature, drainage, vegetation and walking surfaces.
How did the $1.2 million figure enter the record?
The NCIP Committee’s December 17, 2025 agenda packet, Item 4, Attachment 1, project AM-01 lists $1,200,000 in its Cost Estimate column. The item appears as a project application within a broader citywide competition for improvement funding, and the packet does not by itself constitute a final capital budget.
The proposal addresses several kinds of upkeep at once, so residents should ask for a breakdown separating paving, vegetation management, environmental requirements and waste infrastructure before comparing it with a small maintenance job.
How is this different from other Alta Mesa projects?
Alta Mesa News previously reported on a Don Dahvee Park creek-trail crossing project and pavement-condition records for Alta Mesa Road. Lagunita Mirada Park is a separate public-space nomination with its own project identifier, location and scope. Reporting these together as one city contract would be misleading.
What should neighbors check next?
Residents can request the current status of AM-01 from City of Monterey Public Works and the NCIP Committee: whether it was selected for later funding, whether the $1.2 million estimate changed, and whether officials have identified a less expensive phase or maintenance option. No definitive answer to those later questions is shown in the cited application table.
