ALTA MESA / MONTEREY — October 30, 2026. A school serving families around the Monterey Peninsula has made a notable improvement in a statewide school-climate recognition program. Monte Vista TK–8 School advanced from Silver to Platinum in the California Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Recognition Program for 2026, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District announced.

For households in and around Alta Mesa, the result offers a specific example of how local schools are being evaluated for student support, behavior and campus climate. It should not be mistaken for a new school academic ranking or a change in district attendance boundaries.

What changed for Monte Vista?

In 2025, Monte Vista TK–8 was in the PBIS Silver recognition tier, according to district records. In the August 25, 2026 school-district announcement, Monte Vista appears among the 12 campuses receiving the highest, Platinum, level. The district explicitly highlighted Monte Vista’s rise from Silver to Platinum.

The recognition considers the school’s implementation of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports framework, which seeks to establish consistent expectations, reinforce positive behaviors, use data to identify needs and provide additional support to students. It is not equivalent to a reported percentage increase in reading or mathematics proficiency.

How did the larger district perform?

Across Monterey Peninsula Unified, 15 schools received 2026 Gold or Platinum PBIS recognition. Of these, 12 earned Platinum and three earned Gold. The district said its Platinum total had risen from 10 in 2024 to 11 in 2025 and 12 in 2026, marking three consecutive years of growth. Another nearby school, La Mesa School, also appears on the district’s 2026 Platinum list.

District Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh attributed the results to a long-term emphasis on positive school culture and coordinated supports for students. This is the district’s account of its implementation; parents seeking information about one child’s educational or support needs should contact the appropriate school.

What parents can verify

Families can ask schools how PBIS expectations are communicated, how students who need additional support are identified, what behavioral measures are used and how parents participate. The recognition does not mean bullying, discipline problems or attendance issues have disappeared at any school, or that it guarantees a particular educational outcome.

The California Department of Education’s school directory and MPUSD school sites provide addresses, attendance information and family contacts. School attendance eligibility should be checked with MPUSD rather than inferred from a neighborhood name or a housing listing.
